So I just finished watching a recent practice tape of Joel Embiid. His routine starts with hook moves in the post, he sinks 18 from 20, then moves out to 15 feet and drills 12 in a row. He then goes out to 3 point and hits 12 from 15 (nothing but net). The kid looks ripe and ready for action, and reminds me why he was so hyped back in the 2014 draft class. He is another 7-foot stretch 5 who will absolutely feast off the pick and roll, and can space the floor on offensively which will allow Ben Simmons to do what he does best - penetrate the paint.
With the addition of Simmons, the return of Embiid, and Okafor (Noel will be traded soon, not worth mentioning), the 76ers now 'potentially' have one of the fiercest front courts in the league. Sixers finished 9th overall in rebounding last season, and finished 3rd in blocks. Their rim protecting and defensive numbers in the paint were actually quite impressive, its was their offense that really let them down in a big way. They finished 2nd last (above Lakers) for points per game, bottom 3 for 3 point % and dead last in team floor shooting %. So what do the 76ers need to do.. The answer is simple - sign some guards that can actually shoot a basketball.
Isiah Cannan is a restricted free agent, 76ers need to kiss that guy goodbye. He isn't apart of this teams future solution. Ish Smith is also an unrestricted free agent, Sixers may re-sign him but if they do it should be for the second unit only.
Here is the list of guards that the 76ers should pursue this off-season.
Their main target this off season should be to sign Bradley Beal, even if it means offering him a max contract. It will be worth it. Beal is only 22 years old, yes he has faced early injury but it is worth the risk. His offense is exactly what this team is in desperate need of. He is deadly from 3 point and feels comfortable with the mid range pull up. He is also a fantastic catch and shoot guy, which would play right in to the hands of Ben Simmons who would get him countless opportunities on the drive and dish, similar to how Lebron feeds his wing guys Kyrie/JR. Beal just makes the most sense with the options on the table for the Sixers. Gordon and/or Afflalo would also be a great additions - Guys that can slot into fast pace play, guys that are spot up shooters.
With free agency only days away we will just have to wait and see what happens but I will bet my left testicle that we will see at least one of these names on Philadelphia's roster next season as well as Harrison Barnes (but that is another article all together).
