The hangover after an NBA Championship can usually be expected, even more so when your team accomplishes the near impossible - clawing back from a harrowing 3-1 deflect to bring your city their first title in over 50 years.
The Cavaliers looked as though they dodged the hangover as they came bursting hot out of the gates to start the season 13-2.
Lebron James was named Eastern Conference player of the Month averaging an insane 23.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 9.3 assists during October/November. Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving were nothing short of spectacular also, Love averaging 21.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and Irving 24.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists. However the Champs all of a sudden find themselves on a three-game losing streak (13-5) and as much as a small amount of the blame can be placed on the 'Big 3', the burning eyes of judgement should be glaring in the direction of their shirtless shooting guard.. JR SWISH.
Through the last 5 games JR has shot a woeful 7/40 (17.5% FG), and 7/35 from downtown, leading the team in a negative +/- with a -37. With the absence of Cavs sharp shooting veteran Channing Frye (taking time off to grieve his late Father), it is a bad time for JR to go missing in action.
Lets rewind it back a little to JR's eventful off-season.. Amidst all the shirtless partying across the country and reaching cult status, he also got Dan Gilbert to cough up $57 Million to re-sign with the Cavaliers for a further four years, sending the Cavs organisation into uncharted luxury tax. So could it be that JR is actually the one who is hungover? I mean he got his ring (after two years of being on his best behaviour), he got his big money, he is probably feeling way to comfortable around his teammates now and with lapses like this one against the Milwaukee Bucks, it may be time for angry Lebron to bring the hammer down.
Cavaliers Head Coach Tyronne Lue weighed in on JR's mid-game brain fart in the Milwaukee post game interview:
“It was an embarrassing moment. Me and J.R. talked about it. We’re just going to move forward. We had a discussion about it, he felt embarrassed about it. It was an embarrassing play. We talked about it. We’re moving on.”
After the Cavaliers lost their 3rd straight to the Chicago Bulls Lebron James made his opinions on the teams current situation loud and clear:
“We’ve got to get out of the honeymoon stage. You’ve got to play the game the right way. You’ve got to battle every night like we ain’t won nothing. Last year is last year, and after ring night, it’s over with. Now it’s a new season and everybody is gunning for us every night and we have to understand that. The honeymoon stage is over and it’s time to play some real ball and be physical, especially in the trenches. Giving up 78 points is ridiculous. We’ve got to man up. Everybody.”
Cleveland’s next game is on Monday night, as they face a tough road game against their eastern conference rivals the Toronto Raptors. A forth loss would be the Cavs longest losing streak since the beginning of January 2015 (Lebron was out for 3 weeks). Expect to see the champs in take no prisoners mode..
